Activities of NSIOM Central event for observing 3 December, The International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On the occasion of 3 December, the International Day of persons with disabilities, the National Council of Disability Organizations of Macedonia in cooperation with its member organizations held thematic discussion on the topic “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all”. The event was held on 3 December at the Home of Humanitarian Organizations “Dare Dzambaz”. There were representatives of large number of national and local institutions, non-governmental organizations and interested citizens, including Mila Carovska, Minister of Labour and Social Policy, who promised that the state would be dedicated to realizing the activities that go in direction of improving the life of persons with disability.
“It is important to observe this day, but more importantly, we need to think 365 days a year about how to improve the lives of persons with disability. As a Minister, I firmly say that every day we are step closer to realizing your rights. For many years we have witnessed that our fellow-citizens with disability were discriminated, lacked access to adequate health and education services and had no access to employment due to the negligence by the state. But this is changing because this Government is inclusive and together with all of you discusses your everyday problems” – said Minister Carovska.
She reminded that legal changes were made in the first months of the new Government’s work, which facilitated certain approaches to the rights of persons with disabilities. Personal Assistance in Macedonia is regulated by law and the Minister announced that a programme is being prepared that should become a reality in 2018.
Within the Conference, the presidents of the member organizations of the national Council presented their views. PORAKA’s President, Cedomir Trajkvoski, spoke about the advancement of the rights of persons with intellectual disability according the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
