The Republic Center for Support of persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA is civil, parents, national non for profit disability organization, which represents the rights and interests of more than 20.000 persons with intellectual disability in the Republic of Macedonia. It is established in 1963 as Union of societies for helping mentally retarded persons in Macedonia and throughout the years builds a network of local branches in the country, Today the republic Center for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA unites 20 local organizations across the country.
In the past 50 years, the Republic Center – PORAKA as an organization of persons with intellectual disability in the Republic of Macedonia has been a holder of numerous initiatives, aimed towards creating society where all persons with intellectual disability and their families will have dignified life. As a network of local organizations across the country, led by devoted professionals and parents of persons with intellectual disability, the Republic center – PORAKA contributes to the creation of all important laws, policies and programs in Republic of Macedonia that refer to human rights of persons with intellectual disability and their realization on national and local level. Large number of successfully implemented program tasks, special programs, projects and services, speak about the acting and functioning of the Republic Center – PORAKA as an important stakeholder in the process of equalization of opportunities for persons with intellectual disability.
The development path of the Republic Center – PORAKA of half a century is certainly something worthy of respect. Therefore, in 2013 the Republic center – PORAKA carried out activities that appropriately mark this significant jubilee. The aim of these activities is to affirm the potential of persons with intellectual disability, their rights and needs.
The Republic Center – PORAKA, with support of HE Gorge Ivanov, President of the Republic of Macedonia, on 14.10.2013, in the Museum of Macedonian Struggle for Statehood and Independence – Skopje organized an event for celebrating the 50 years of active work.
At the event, Vasilka Dimoska MD, Program Manager in the Republic Center – PORAKA, promoted the Research Report on the conditions regarding the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability: “The Rights of Persons with Intellectual Disability in Republic of Macedonia”. Moreover, Vasilka Dimoska MD, presented the Manual on the rights of patients with focus on persons with intellectual disability.
Then followed the speeches of Mr. Cedomir Trajkovski, President of the Republic center – PORAKA and Mr. Dime Spasov, Minister of Labor and Social Policy, and closing speech by HE Gorge Ivanov, President of Republic of Macedonia.
In addition to the event, participants had the opportunity to see the exhibition of handicrafts made by persons with intellectual disability.
