With the adoption of the new Law on Primary Education in 2019, as well as the adoption of the Concept for Inclusive Education by the Ministry of Education and Science, the state made a big step towards recognising the right to inclusive education of children with disability and special educational needs and set a solid framework for the upcoming reform processes.

The European Commission has recently published three comprehensive catalogues and manuals to support employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. These resources come alongside with the first Toolkit published in 2022, which is a guide for Public Employment Services on how they can promote the participation of persons with disability in the labour market.

 The programme activities in the Day Centre of the Republic Centre - PORAKA in Prilep have been implemented as foreseen in the past period. Different activities were realised with the users aimed for gaining and improving the independent living skills. Within the social activities numerous actions were conducted in cooperation with other people and organisations.

Activities of the users of the Day Centres of the Republic Centre – PORAKA in Skopje at the Community Garden “Zelena Arka - Bostanie”

The benefits of these activities are clearly multiple and long-lasting. Stereotypes are breaking regarding the independence of persons with disability. Working in the garden also has a therapeutic effect, and undoubtedly through communication with other gardeners, their socialisation and inclusion in the community improves.

Starting from 2000, the Republic Centre for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA is actively involved in creating conditions for implementation of the reform process of deinstitutionalization in our country, i.e., prevention from institutionalization by establishing social services for support of persons with intellectual disability and their families in the community.

The programme activities of the Republic Centre – PORAKA are based and are in line with the implementation process of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as an exceptionally imperative document that is legally binding for the states that have ratified it. The Reference document that the Republic Centre – PORAKA is going to use in its activities will be the Concluding observations on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities sent to the Republic of North Macedonia during the 2018 September session of the Committee. The Republic Centre – PORAKA had and will have a significant role in all processes that refer to the UN Convention.

2023 marks 60 years of active participation of the Republic centre for Support of persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA. In the past 60 years, the Republic centre – PORAKA, as an organization for persons with intellectual disability in our country, has been a leader of numerous initiatives aimed at creating society in which all persons with intellectual disability and their families will have a dignified life.

Workshop held for SWOT analyses and operational activities of the local organizations of the Republic Centre – PORAKA

For years back, the Republic Centre – PORAKA organizes and holds workshops where the SWOT analyses of the local organizations are being reviewed and discussed. The SWOT analysis is a structured planning method for the future strategies of the organization, and at the same time a very useful tool for assessing the current situation within the organization, with all its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opportunities and the threats that come from the environment where the organization acts. The workshop for SWOT analyses and operational activities has the goal to consolidate and improve the activities and the work of the local organizations of the Republic Centre – PORAKA.

Activities within the project “Intercultural Learning for All”

The users of the Day Centres of the Republic Centre – PORAKA took part in the event, together with the educators. During the final event they had the opportunity to present the gained experience from the project activities. Through video materials from the previously held workshops, presentations, as well as other materials used in the workshops held at their Day Centres, the users presented the work done in the past months. They spoke on the themes addressed at the workshops referred to discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes related to persons with intellectual disability, culture and customs, and nonviolent communication. Also, they presented their culinary skills.

Activities within the project “Intercultural Learning for All”

The Republic Centre for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA in cooperation with the Association “Halfway There” from Serbia and SUMERO from Bosnia and Herzegovina started the implementation of the project Intercultural Learning for All in January 2023. This project is based on the long-term experience of all three project partners in the field of social inclusion, development of skills of persons with intellectual disability in terms of occupational therapy, creativity, self-advocacy skills, intercultural learning, and tolerance.

The Day Centres of the Republic Centre – PORAKA in Skopje implemented numerous activities in the past period, which are result from the renewed cooperation with eminent institutions in the area of health and education. In April and May, both Day Centres were visited by students from the Medical Faculty (Faculty of Medicine) in Skopje, members of the European Medical Students Association of Macedonia – EMSA.

Workshop for evaluating the programme for work of the Republic Centre – PORAKA’s Day Centres

Starting from February 2022, the Republic Centre for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA reconstructed its programme for work in the Day Centres, which has been agreed at the workshop “Practical activities for advancing the independent living skills for the users in the Day Centres and Social Clubs of the Republic Centre – PORAKA”.

In the past period, a new practice has been introduced to the users, in which with guidance by the educator, they can practice using chemical products independently. Continuous practice of these activities provides better skills in determining quantity, recognizing the products according to pictures, and caution when using them. These types of activities assist in learning the importance that clean home/space leads to better personal health.

Western Balkans Fund (WBF), with the support of the EU, supported the project of the Association “Halfway there” under the name “Intercultural Learning for All”, which will be implemented in the period from January to September 2023.

The Mayor of City of Skopje visited the Day Centre of the Republic Centre – PORAKA in Skopje, Aerodrom

City of Skopje and the Centre for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA Skopje signed a Contract for supporting both Day Centres for persons with intellectual disability above 18 years of age, in Kapistec and Aerodrom, in accordance with the programme for activities in the social, children’s and health care protection on 27.01.2023.

PORAKA Radovis observed 3 December with numerous activities. On 21.11.2022 two different creative workshops were realised at the Day Centre of the Republic Centre – PORAKA in Radovis. The first one was aimed at introducing the ways of providing first aid, and during the second one, the users of the Day Centre created handicrafts from clay.

In organization of the National Coordinative Body for Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and the National Council of Disability Organizations in Macedonia, and in cooperation with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) there was a formal session for observing 3 December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
